Klaas’s Cuckoo Chrysococcyx klaas
This beautiful emerald bird can be found all over Ghana. Solitary and unobtrusive it inhabits a wide variety of wooded areas and is more often heard than seen. It’s evocative cry says everything about our love for each other, family and friends: “m’afioo” translates from Akan to “I’ve missed you”. Uttered thrice to show the depth of it’s feeling.
Like all cuckoos this bird lays it’s eggs in other species nests. A gift, a surprise, an opportunity or regret. Much like the happenings of each year, welcome, joyous or sorrowful and often unexpected; but each, hopefully, providing an opportunity to grow in love, appreciation and gratitude.
